There’s more to traveling than just getting your flight and wandering about aimlessly. To really make the most of your time abroad, you’ll want to do at least a little research. It’s useful to know the best things to do in a town, or where the locals eat, which festivals and celebrations are running, and more. TravBuddy allows you to find travel friends as well as build up a decent understanding of a country or location, all through its forums and articles.
There are two elements to this website. The first is finding travel companions. You can do this by getting involved on the site’s forums, where members talk about a range of travel issues from “how to stay safe” to “what to eat in Bangkok”. This is a great way of getting involved in the community and getting real, practical advice from people who have real experiences abroad. If you want to find a friend to travel with, then you may wish to access the “Find a Travel Buddy” section of the website, which essentially allows you to post up a profile of yourself, and then to specify where you’d like to go and who you’d like to meet.
So, imagine you want to visit Thailand for a couple of weeks. You want to meet someone who’s laid back and who’s been there before, so they can help to show you around a bit. No problem, you just place an advert-style post on the site and then anyone who has signed up to “find a travel buddy” can get in touch. You can search this database of adverts, specifying the date you wish to travel, the gender of travelers, their age range, members with photos, members who have recently been active, their current location or any key words (such as hobbies).
TravBuddy has well over half a million members, meaning you ought to be able to find someone who would like to travel with you, where and whenever you decide to go. As well as offering an area to talk with like-minded travellers, the website also provides an area for people to post their experiences and to chat about their travels. You can get a great deal of information from these posts, including where to eat or stay, local customs, festival activities and more. A lot of the information you’ll receive will be personal so you won’t just get lists of hotels (which you often find in travel guides).
Whilst the site isn’t the most attractive one around, (there’s quite a bit of text) it is generally well organized and should only take a few minutes for you to find your feet. It’s also free to use, unless you wish to use the “find a travel buddy” feature, which is still very cheap at $9.99 for life. There are a few pleasing and useful extras such as the ability to build lists of friends or to rate experiences, which allow you to share your thoughts and build a network of friends.
All things considered, we were very impressed by what TravBuddy had to offer. Look beyond it’s somewhat-slapdash exterior and there’s gold underneath.
